Thanks so much, Becky. It is very validating to hear all of this, and I appreciate the kind words. My current relationship with my parents is kind of up and down — my dad has changed quite a lot and we’re close; right now, I’m taking a break from my mother due to ongoing toxic behaviors. I hope to reconnect someday, if she can change.
I like the idea of being gentle with yourself and looking back on the younger you. I often think of that, too — how would I talk to my former self? — and it helps me with self-compassion. I wish you hadn’t had to have had this experience, and I wish you all the best in your healing process.
